Produced by
the adrenal gland, DHEA, or dehydroenphiandrosterone, is often referred
to by gerontologists as the body's "mother of all hormones". DHEA
is a prohormone that gives birth to other active hormones. It is the most
abundant steroid in the human blood stream. Regulated by a target organ,
your physiology readily converts this complex chemical substance into such
necessary endocrine secretions as estrogen, testosterone, progesterone,
corticosterone and others. Moreover, DHEA is the only hormone that declines
with age in both men and women, and any excessive decline indicates that
the age-related deterioration is taking place.
The adrenal
glands make enormous quantities of DHEA when people are young, and the
hormone courses through the bloodstream. Some DHEA is also made in the
brain, but as people age, the adrenals produce less. Joints stiffen, bone
mass decreases, sleep becomes restless and relaxation more difficult,
moods often darken and stress becomes harder to handle. DHEA can be manufactured
by simple chemical techniques and can be purchased in small capsule doses
at better health food stores.
