Heart Factors:

Homocysteine is a toxic amino acid shown to be a significant risk factor for cardiovascular disease, neural tube defects and more.
Multiple studies have demonstrated that high and even intermediate levels of plasma homocysteine are associated with increased risk for heart disease, cerebrovascular disease and peripheral artery disease.
The most well known of these studies is the Physician's Health Study (the study that indicated that aspirin helps prevent heart attacks). In this study, researchers compared the 5% (of a total of 14,915) of doctors with the highest homocysteine level with the doctors in the study who had lower or normal homocysteine levels. This increase in risk of heart attack (myocardial infarction) is comparable with the increase in risk caused by smoking- not surprising since smoking increases homocysteine! (This is only one of the many health risks encountered by smokers). This is a slightly higher risk than is typically associated with elvated cholesterol levels- but recall that blood and dietary cholesterol are poorly correlated. For heart disease, high homocysteine levels have roughly the same risk factor as high blood pressure.
It is clear that a main line of defense against heart attacks and strokes is to lower homocysteine levels!
The good news is that we can lower homocysteine levels naturally, and thereby lower our risk of heart and vascular disease! In one study, indicated daily treatment with the methyl donors choline, trimethylglycine, and folic acid normalized homocysteine levels in 16 out of 19 patients who were treated. In another study of 309 patients with premature vascular disease, out of 72 patients found to have elevated levels of homocysteine, 66 (92%) who were treated with vitamin B6 plus folic acid were able to normalize their homocysteine levels within six weeks. In a case study, three patients with elevated homocysteine levels were treated with B6 and folic acid for one month. In two of the cases, homocysteine dropped, although not down to normal levels. When trimethylglycine was added to the treatment, homocysteine levels dropped to normal levels in two of the cases after one month, and in the third case, after the third month homocysteine levels went down to normal. In none of the three cases were any side effects observed. These results suggest that not only does methyl donor supplementation lower homocysteine levels, but also that using methyl donors in combination is more effective than using them independently.
Trimethylglycine (TMG) is a chemical compound that is synthesized in the body from choline but needs to be included in the diet. A good source of TMG is derived from sugar beets.
